Cloud-based applications and infrastructure drive new enterprise WAN connectivity requirements

Between January and February 2020, Omdia interviewed 180 network professionals at medium (100–999 employees), large (1,000–9,999 employees), and very large (10,000–500,000 employees) North American enterprises for an in-depth look at the evolving requirements for enterprise edge connectivity, including MPLS-based wide area networks (WANs), and software-defined WANs (SD-WANs). Forty-three percent of respondents came from medium enterprises, 45% from large ones, and 12% from very large ones

Enterprise IT architectures and consumption models are undergoing a major transformation, from servers and applications placed at individual enterprise sites to a hybrid and multicloud model, where centralized, highly utilized servers in enterprise-operated data centers (DCs) are complemented with best-of-breed infrastructure as a service (IaaS). This allows organizations to bring the benefits of cloud architectures—simplified management, agility, and scalability—to their own data centers and leverage the on-demand aspect of cloud services during peak periods. In addition, respondents are also investing heavily in software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications, increasing their dependency on third parties.
