Electromagnetic Compatibility and Electronic Enclosure Design Guide

Electromagnetic interference (EMI), or radio frequency interference (RFI), is when an electrical system causes unexpected interference in an electrical device. Device malfunctions could occur as a result of an EMI related issue, ranging from innocuous noise to more severe, such as an accident related to failure of an electrical safety system.

Significant advancements in electronic devices, particularly in communication and wireless technology, have led to a substantial increase in electromagnetic interference (EMI) across a broader frequency range. These unwanted signals not only compromise the efficiency of equipment but also can disrupt the operation of communication systems. One example is microprocessors, which use high-frequency signals in their operation and can cause nearby equipment to malfunction.

This paper aims to give engineers an oversight of what technological advances will challenge current approaches to EMI shielding and provides a detailed guide on materials currently available in the market to consider in your design process.
